Locally owned, NC licensed, kid and pet safe, and backed by 25+ years of Eastern North Carolina pest experience.

Seeing a Few Ants Usually Means Thousands More Nearby

If ants are trailing across your kitchen counter, around baseboards, or near pet-food bowls, you're not dealing with 'a few ants' — you're seeing the foragers from a much larger colony. In Eastern North Carolina, long warm seasons, 54+ inches of annual rain, and high humidity create ideal conditions for several ant species to thrive around homes year-round. Most infestations start outdoors, then send foraging trails inside for food and moisture.

That's why spraying the ants you can see almost never works. Store-bought sprays kill foragers but leave the queen and nest untouched, so the colony simply reroutes and keeps coming. Eastline's approach is built to eliminate the colony at its source — we find the nest, treat the trails, and set up a barrier so they don't come back.

Our Ant Control Service Covers

  • Indoor treatment of active trails, entry points, and nesting voids
  • Outdoor perimeter and foundation treatment to stop ants before they get in
  • Crawl space and attic inspection for hidden carpenter-ant satellite colonies
  • Targeted baiting that foragers carry back to wipe out the queen and brood
  • Prevention advice — moisture, vegetation, and entry-point fixes specific to your home

Which Ant Do You Have? Common Eastern NC Species

Different ants need different treatment. Correctly identifying the species is the difference between a quick fix and a recurring problem — here are the ones we treat most often around New Bern and the coast.

Carpenter Ants

The big ones. Workers are large (about 1/4 to 1/2 inch), usually black, sometimes reddish, with a single 'pinch' at the waist and bent antennae. They don't eat wood like termites — they excavate it to build smooth galleries for their nests, leaving behind sawdust-like shavings (frass). They target moist, decayed wood: window frames, porch posts, crawl spaces, and roof lines. A mature colony can top 10,000 workers and cause real structural damage over time. See the carpenter-ant spotlight below.

Sugar Ants / Odorous House Ants

The tiny ones on your counter. 'Sugar ant' is the common name people search for; in Eastern NC these are usually odorous house ants — small, dark brown to black, and named for the coconut-like smell they give off when crushed. They love sweets and moisture, which is why they show up around sinks, dishwashers, pet bowls, and pantries. They form fast-moving trails and large colonies with multiple queens, so DIY sprays just split the colony and make it worse.

Pavement Ants

Small brown-to-black ants that nest under driveways, patios, sidewalks, slabs, and pavers — then forage indoors along baseboards and through slab cracks. You'll often spot small piles of displaced soil at pavement seams. They'll eat almost anything, which keeps them coming back to kitchens and garages.

Other Ants We Handle

Argentine ants — huge interconnected 'supercolonies' with many queens; notoriously hard to DIY. Acrobat ants — raise their heart-shaped abdomen when disturbed and often nest in damp wood and wall voids. Little black ants — exactly what they sound like, with long trails along foundations and counters. Whatever's marching through your home, we'll identify it and treat it.

Have painful stinging ants in mounds out in your yard? Those are fire ants, and they need a different outdoor mound-and-bait treatment. See our dedicated Fire Ant Control page for that service. This page covers the household and wood-damaging ants that get inside your home.

Carpenter Ants: The Quiet Threat to Your Home's Wood

Carpenter ants are the most damaging ant in Eastern North Carolina because they hollow out the wood your home is built from. They're drawn to moisture, so leaky pipes, clogged gutters, wood-to-soil contact, and humid crawl spaces are open invitations. A colony usually starts in a damp tree stump or woodpile outside, then sends satellite colonies into wall voids, window frames, and subfloors — which is why they're so easy to miss until the damage is done.

Carpenter Ants vs. Termites — How to TellCarpenter AntsTermites
The damageSmooth, clean galleries; wood looks excavatedMud-packed tunnels; eat the wood itself
The droppingsCoarse "frass" — wood shavings + insect bitsTiny pellets or fine powder

The bodyPinched waist, bent antennae, largerStraight waist, straight antennae, smaller

Not sure which you've got? It matters — they need completely different treatments. If you suspect termites, see our Termite Control page. If it's carpenter ants, we'll find the nest and the moisture source feeding it.

Warning Signs of a Carpenter Ant Problem

  • Large black ants indoors, especially at night or in spring
  • Small piles of sawdust-like shavings under window sills, baseboards, or crawl space wood
  • A faint rustling sound inside walls (a large colony at work)
  • Winged "swarmer" ants near windows — a sign of an established, mature colony nearby

How Eastline Eliminates Ants — Step by Step

1

Inspect & Identify

We walk the property inside and out — kitchen, baths, crawl space, attic, and foundation — to identify the exact species, map the trails, and find entry points and nesting sites. Carpenter ants in particular hide satellite colonies, so this step is essential.

2

Treat the Colony at the Source

We use targeted baits that foragers carry back to the nest to eliminate the queen and brood — not just a surface spray. Where needed, we treat wall voids, trails, and outdoor nests directly. Every product we use is applied by a licensed technician and is kid and pet safe when used as directed.

3

Build a Barrier

We treat the exterior perimeter and foundation so new foragers can't establish indoors, and we seal or flag the entry points letting them in.

4

Prevent & Protect

We give you a plain-English plan for the moisture, vegetation, and food sources drawing ants to your home — and offer optional recurring service (monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly). And if ants come back between visits, so do we.

Why the Ants Keep Coming Back After You Spray

Hardware-store sprays are built to kill the ants you can see. The problem is that the foragers on your counter are less than 10% of the colony — the queen and brood are hidden in a nest you can't reach. Worse, many sprays act as a repellent: instead of killing the colony, they cause it to 'bud' and split into several new colonies, multiplying your problem. Species like odorous house ants and Argentine ants are especially prone to this.

Professional ant control works differently. We use non-repellent products and slow-acting baits specifically so foragers carry the treatment deep into the nest before it takes effect — wiping out the queen and the colony from the inside out. That's the difference between ants gone for a week and ants gone for good.
